A long planting season for this northwest Iowa farmer

The 2019 planting season was a long one for northwest Iowa farmer Kelly Nieuwenhuis.

“We started April 26th and finished June 10th—that’s not normal,” Nieuwenhuis says.

The corn he planted at the end of April took almost a month to emerge–but Nieuwenhuis says it looks good.

“It’s eight inches tall now and looks pretty good—and then the corn we planted on June 5th or 6th, it’s just emerged,” he says. “So we’ve got stuff that’s a long ways behind and we’ve got some that’s right in line where it should be.”

His soybeans have yet to emerge. Nieuwenhuis says there is “definitely” going to be some yield loss in the later-planted crops.

“We know that. Anybody that farms knows there’s yield loss in both the corn and soybean crops this year. A lot has to be determined yet, but there’s definitely going to be a yield loss.”

Nieuwenhuis farms near Primghar, Iowa.
