A farm bill draft has started

The ranking member of the Senate Agriculture Committee says work has already begun on drafting the next farm bill.

U.S. Senator for Arkansas John Boozman tells Brownfield an increase in reference prices will likely be considered in the trillion dollar farm bill and its possible for new items to be included, like foreign ag land legislation.

“We need to go forward with hearings and understand it better before we make any decisions.”

Boozman says the four leaders of the agriculture committees meet throughout the process and there’s a lot of work ahead to get a bill completed in the next eight months. And he says if a bill cannot be done by the deadline…

“We’ll basically continue the current farm bill until we figure out the new one. Sooner is better than later.”

The first farm bill hearing of the new year will be next Wednesday.
