European Union going through “massive adjustment” in pork production

A top competitor to U.S. pork exports is going through a major production shift.

U.S. Meat Export Federation CEO Dan Halstrom says the European Union has been a formidable supplier of pork for several decades.

“But their industry is making a massive adjustment at the moment, massive. Let me repeat that, a massive adjustment.”

Speaking during the opening general assembly of the USMEF Spring Conference in Minneapolis Wednesday afternoon, he said high input costs, African swine fever trade restrictions within Europe, Ukraine grain disruptions, inflation, and a restrictive regulatory environment are leading to significant contraction.

“So this is significant on a lot of fronts. Traditionally, the EU is our largest competitor in a lot of these markets around the world, and no doubt that their competitiveness has taken a big hit in the last 6 to 12 months.”

Halstrom says EU pork production was down more than five percent in 2022 and is forecast to be down another five percent in 2023.
