Irrigators mitigating crop stress

Exceptionally dry conditions persist across Michigan as the planting season nears completion.

USDA says farmers have planted 88 percent of corn and 82 percent of soybeans with about half of it emerged.

Winter wheat condition held steady at 68 percent good to excellent and 95 percent of the crop jointed.  Sugarbeet condition was also steady at 58 percent good to excellent.

Water stress is a concern for fruit growers with crops in bloom and hot weather pushed development.  Irrigation use is widespread and asparagus harvest is underway with good yields reported.

Most of the lower peninsula is in moderate drought.
