2019 beef price outlook: “tale of two halves”

A 2019 beef price forecast points to a tale of two halves.

CattleFax VP of industry relations Kevin Good says fed cattle placements ended 2018 about 300,000 head lower.

“We kept a larger percentage of last fall’s calf crop outside of feed yards that are going to be coming back into the feed yards at some point in 2019.”

Good predicts more fed cattle will enter the market between March and June.

“We feel like this could be a year that you’ll look at and see the first half versus the second half could look extremely different from a price pattern standpoint.”

Good is optimistic about the first half of 2019, but says he’s concerned larger supplies will pressure prices in the second half of the year.
