Minnesota cattleman using versatile barn

A west-central Minnesota cattleman is enjoying the versatility of his new barn.

Mark Pesek of rural Canby runs a commercial cow/calf operation and sells club calves nationwide.

The farm takes full advantage of a 120 by 60 foot barn that features a 21 foot lean.

“We’ve got the side-walls of the barn big enough so that when we’re not calving in it, we can park machinery in it.  There’s a warming room that we break club calves in for our sales in September.  And there’s a heated room that we use to warm calves that has a heated floor, and it diversifies as a wash rack for the club calves when we’re getting sale calves ready.”

Pesek says the barn is also equipped with a camera system that frees him up to spend more time with family.

“We can pull up the cows and check them from any location where you have smartphone or internet access, including my house which is four miles south of (the farm).  So I see it being a huge advantage as my kids get older and start playing sports, I’ll be able to check cows and still attend sporting events.”

The Pesek family recently showed off their facilities during the Minnesota State Cattlemens Association Summer Beef Tour.
