Rural Americans should be watching Right to Farm legislation

IMG_0240Oklahoma’s Attorney General says farmers should be paying attention to Right to Farm measures that are being proposed around the country.

Scott Pruitt recently spoke at a Protect the Harvest Legislative Meet and Greet event at the Indiana Statehouse.

He tells Brownfield the farmers and ranchers he meets with are frustrated with regulatory overreach from both state and federal governments.  “What we’re trying to do and what I’m trying to do is to give voice to those individuals,” he says.  “To take action and make sure we are protecting their interests.  Sometimes that is at the state level with C3 and Charitable Enforcement, Right to Farm initiatives and legislations.  And sometimes it is taking on the Obama Administration and suing the EPA.”

Pruitt says the attitude in rural America is changing.  “The biggest thing that I see and I’m excited about – is there is an awakening going on with individuals within the ag community saying they’ve had enough,” he says.

This November, Oklahoma voters will vote on State Question 777 – the state’s Right to Farm Measure that Pruitt says will establish a constitutional guarantee allowing farmers and ranchers to continue their farming and ranching practices.  “To make sure that agencies at the state level that adopt regulations don’t adopt regulations that impede our ability to use our private property,” he says.  “Unless there is a really compelling reason to do so.”

He says Statehouse events, like the Protect the Harvest event, are a great opportunity for the farmers and ranchers and agriculture’s stakeholders to keep legislators informed about the issues that matter.

  • To make sure that agencies at the state level that adopt regulations don’t adopt regulations that impede our ability to use our private property,” he says. “Unless there is a really compelling reason to do so.” What do you mean by a really compelling reason to do so. They have no reason to use our personal Private property we bought and paid for?? Which side are you own??
