Michigan Farm Bureau members feed the hungry

MFB Harvest for All

Michigan farmers are working to feed those in need.

Tonia Ritter, manager of the promotion and education program for Michigan Farm Bureau, says members have partnered with Kids’ Food Basket, a regional food distribution program in West Michigan, to provide for students with supplemental snacks over the Christmas break.  “We are putting some preparations together for the Christmas snack bags that Kids’ Food Basket will be distributing just before the holidays this year and we will also be packing 2,500 backpack snack bags.”  The organization also donated almost $10,000 to Kids’ Food Basket with matching funds from the Invest an Acre program.

Ritter tells Brownfield Farm Bureau members throughout the year give volunteer hours, monetarily and their own commodities to local communities.  “We have a lot things that are contributed from our variety of specialty crops in the state.”  She says, “That’s a great opportunity for our members because it provides such a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables into the programs where they’re distributing foods to families that really need the food.”

Farm Bureau members donated more than 79.5 tons of surplus agricultural commodities, nearly 1.2 tons of non-perishable food products, $32,688.25 in financial donations and 582 hours of volunteer time as part of this year’s Harvest for All program.
