Yield losses from downed corn, up to 100 bushels per acre, have been reported in Nebraska.

Several days of 40 to 50 mile per winds in late October caused stalk breakage and ear loss.   Lynn Chrisp, who farms near Hastings in southcentral Nebraska, says he suffered significant yield loss.

“We pulled into a field at nine o’clock in the morning. With our yield monitors, we knew what it was doing and we were very pleased with what we were seeing,” Chrisp says. “By five o’clock that afternoon, it was 40 bushel less. Throughout the day we lost 40 bushels that was on the ground that we couldn’t get picked up.”

Chrisp says having crop insurance will help.

“It took what could have been a very excellent, rewarding year into a situation of ‘better call the insurance agent’,” he says. “That’s why, with the perils of farming, crop insurance is very important.”

Chrisp is first vice president of the National Corn Growers Association.
