Midday cash livestock prices

A light cattle trade is being reported in the South on Wednesday at 104.00, $3.00 lower than last week. DTN reports a large string also has been sold in Nebraska at 104.00, $2.00 lower than last week. Private sources have indicated that the Southern bids have now been backed up to 103.00.

Boxed beef cutouts in the morning report are higher, choice beef 190.92, up 2.70, select 179.85 up .27.

Feeder cattle receipts at the Ozarks Regional Stockyards at West Plains, Missouri on Tuesday totaled 2,773 head. Compared to last week, feeder steers traded 4.00 to 7.00 lower while heifers were 2.00 to 4.00 lower. The demand was light on a moderate supply. With nighttime temperatures dipping into the 40s, buyers showed little interest in un-weaned calves, and with cattle futures limit down there was not a whole lot of interest in anything else. Feeder steers medium and large 1 averaging 818 pounds traded at 127.41 per hundredweight. Heifers averaging 510 pounds brought 124.96.

Slaughter cattle receipts at the Fairview Sale Barn, Fairview, Illinois totaled 283 head. Compared to last week, slaughter steers and heifers sold 1.00 to 2.00 lower. Slaughter cows and bulls were steady. The trade was active with moderate demand. Slaughter steers choice 2 to 4 traded from 95.50 to 104.26. Slaughter heifers range from 95.00 to 105.00.

The Buffalo, Missouri Livestock Market monthly sheep and goat auction had receipts of 1012 head on Tuesday. The supply and demand was good with a near standing room only crowd. Markets were lower across the board compared to last month. Feeder lambs medium and large 1-2 weighing 35 to 40 pounds brought 150.00 to 185.00 per hundredweight. Slaughter lambs, prime 1-2 weighing 51 to 74 pounds brought 170.00 to 187.50 per hundredweight. Feeder kids selection 1 weighing 29 to 35 pounds traded from 165.00 to 182.50 per hundredweight.

Barrows and gilts in the Iowa/Minnesota direct trade opened .87 lower at 49.46 weighted average on a carcass basis, the West is down .81 at 49.45, and nationally the market is 1.35 lower at 48.61. Missouri direct base carcass meat price is a 1.00 lower from 45.00 to 47.00. Midwest hogs on a live basis range from 29.00 to 36.00.

The pork carcass cutout value is up .12 at 77.69 FOB plant.

Cash hog prices remain under pressure as packers have access to plenty of hogs to fill daily needs and runs without actively searching hard to fill loads or dig deeper in their pockets. Cash prices are expected to remain in the range of steady to $1.00 lower, with bids steady to .50 lower. Packers seem to be in a position to continue this routine week after week, according to DTN analysts.
