Midday cash livestock markets

The feedlot cattle trade is slow to start on Friday with just a few scattered bids on the table at 98.00 live and 154.00 dressed. Packer inquiry will continue to improve as the day progresses. It is possible though that significant trade could be delayed until the release of the October 1 on feed report this afternoon. Asking prices are around 100.00 to 102.00 in the South and 159.00 in the North. A very light trade was reported in parts of Nebraska on Thursday at 154.00, fully steady with last week’s weighted average.

Boxed beef cutout values are mixed, choice beef up 2.08 at 179.97, select 167.58, down .16.

Feeder cattle receipts at Missouri auctions this week totaled 17,625 head. . Feeder steers and heifers sold 5.00 to 8.00 lower than the previous week with some lighter weight steer calves as much as 15.00 lower early in the week. The exception this week was found on better quality heifers mostly over 550 pounds that were suitable for replacements and sold steady to 3.00 higher. Feeder demand was light to moderate. The supply was light to moderate. Feeder steers medium and large 1 weighing 723 pounds averaged 122.09 per hundredweight. 675 pound heifers brought 112.25.

Feeder cattle receipts at Lamoni, Iowa on Thursday totaled 2109 head. There was no price comparison due to no sale last week. Compared to other sales last week, prices appear weak to lower. Cattle weighing over 600 pounds made up seventy-four percent of the offering with forty-eight percent steers, and fifty-two percent heifers. Feeder steer calves medium and large 1 weighing 663 pounds averaged 137.12 per hundredweight. 680 pound heifer calves brought 123.59.

At the St. Onge Newell Sheep Auction in South Dakota 3142 head sold with 66 % of the offering feeder lambs. Feeder lambs were steady except for those under 70 pounds, and they were 2.00 to 6.00 higher, lambs over 100 pounds sold 6.00 to 8.00 lower. 610 head of lambs medium and large 1-2 averaging 94 pounds brought 148.54 per hundredweight.

Barrows and gilts in the Iowa/Minnesota direct trade are not reported due to confidentiality, the five day rolling averaged a 46.24. Western hogs are down .44 at 45.40 weighted average on a carcass basis. Nationally the direct hog market 44.58, down .86. Missouri direct base carcass meat price is steady from 38.00 to 39.00. Midwest hogs on a live basis not well tested, only Peoria, IL reporting with 100 head at st4eady prices from 22.00 to 25.00.

The pork carcass cutout value 74.02 in the morning report FOB plant, up 1.50.

Extremely strong pork plant processing schedules will continue to move massive amounts of market ready hogs through plants and into the hands of pork consumers. Pork demand continues to be strong, leaving packers focused on maximizing plant capacity in order to fill these orders.
