Midday cash livestock markets

So far today there is little action in the cash cattle trade. USDA Mandatory reported negotiated cash trade on Wednesday was moderate to light on light to moderate demand in the Southern Plains. Compared to the latest established market two weeks ago, live sales were mostly 6.00 lower from 103.00 to 104.00, with the bulk at 104.00. Trade was light to moderate on light demand in Nebraska with a few live sales from 103.00 to 103.50 and dressed sales from 161.00 to 163.00 that was 4.00 to 7.00 lower. More trade may be seen in the North today, but it sounds like trading in Kansas and Texas is essentially done for the week.

Boxed beef cutout values are firm to higher in the morning report. Choice beef 190.82, up .17, and select 180.16, up .22.

Feeder cattle receipts at the Springfield, Missouri Livestock Marketing Center totaled 1,515 head on Wednesday. Compared to last week steer calves were 6.00 to 10.00 lower, heifer calves traded 5.00 to 8.00 lower, yearlings 5.00 to 6.00 lower. The demand was moderate to light on a moderate supply. Feeder steers medium and large 1 weighing 725 pounds averaged 126.94 per hundredweight. Feeder Holsteins large 1 weighing 635 pounds brought 87.65. Feeder heifers weighing 580 pounds averaged 117.22.

Sheep receipts at the Sioux Falls Regional Livestock at Worthing, South Dakota totaled 1495 head. Slaughter lambs were 7.00 to 10.00 lower. Feeder lambs sold with a lower undertone. There was light to moderate demand for slaughter lambs, with the best demand for shorn as frequent heavy rains have caused plenty of mud. Just a limited offering of feeder lambs were met with moderate demand. Slaughter lambs shorn choice and prime 2-3 weighing 140 pounds brought 149.68 per hundredweight. Medium and large 1-2 feeder lambs weighing 85 pounds traded at 140.82 per hundredweight.

The Fort Atkinson, Iowa Hay Auction had overall average prices of mostly steady on limited consignments. Not much hay is moving now, so buyers that need hay have been willing to bid the better hay higher. The auction was still getting a few lots of water damaged hay, very low priced, but that number is going down, Good hay brought $80.00 to 110.00 per ton, and premium quality at 210.00.

Barrows and gilts in the Iowa/Minnesota direct trade are .87 lower at 48.82 weighted average on a carcass basis, the West is down .90 at 48.77, and nationally the market is .99 lower at 48.56. Missouri direct base carcass meat price is steady from 45.00 to 47.00. Midwest hogs on a live basis are steady to 2.00 lower from 27.00 to 36.00.

The pork carcass cutout value is down 1.35 at 73.82 FOB plant. Bellies are 3.67 lower, and ribs and hams are down over 2.00.
