Managing for Profit

Improved service boosts farmers’ bottom line

A survey indicates U.S. railroad service was a lot better during last fall’s harvest than it was the year before that.

“The railroads deserve commendation for the service that they provided this year,” said Mike Steenhoek, executive director of the Soy Transportation Coalition.  The survey of 42 grain handling facilities in South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota and Nebraska gave rail service high marks, according to Steenhoek.

If there’s a reason to criticize transportation providers, Steenhoek says his organization does that, but he says the same goes if there are reasons for compliments.  Rail companies plan to invest $29 billion into improving their infrastructure and service, said Steenhoek.

Whether it’s good or bad, Steenhoek says it’s necessary to keep watching the performance of transportation providers.
