Riparian buffer zones are areas of grasses, perennials or trees that separate farmland from streams and rivers.

NC State crop and soil science professor Deanna Osmond says she and others on her team have examined the ability of riparian buffers to reduce nitrogen from agricultural land flowing through shallow groundwater into larger waterways.
