Why increasing local processing matters to consumers

Last week the USDA announced $500 million in grants that would be available to help expand small and mid-sized local and regional processing facilities.

Not only will that help increase competition in the cattle market, which is something we’ve addressed before, but it could also help increase profitability for the nation’s cattle producers.  And, at the same time, it provides more locally sourced foods, meeting consumer requests.

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says the move benefits the entire food supply chain.
