Bayer reaches settlement agreement over Roundup

Bayer has announced its latest settlement to resolve a collection of claims that Roundup causes cancer — avoiding a trial that was set to begin this week.

In a statement to Brownfield, Bayer says it’s pleased that the case was settled on reasonable terms.

The agreement, reached last Thursday, addressed a lawsuit filed in 2017 by a St. Louis resident who said he was exposed to Roundup while working for the city in the 1990s. A dozen other people joined the lawsuit, saying the chemical caused non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Bayer is seeking a review of a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that found the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act doesn’t pre-empt state law negligence claims.

Bayer purchased Missouri-based Monsanto in 2018.
