EPA reforms expand E15 sales
The EPA has removed a regulatory barrier to using E15 in the summer. EPA
Assistant Administrator Bill Wehrum told reporters Friday morning the move will
result in a substantial increase in the amount of E15 sold.
“And as a result, that will allow us to continue to increase the amount of
renewable fuel blended into the gasoline supply,” said Wehrum, during a media
conference call.
A second part of the EPA regulatory reform increases transparency in renewable
identification number compliance. That will deter price manipulation of the credits,
known as RINs, according to Wehrum.
“Once we attain that better view into the [RINs] market we’ll be able to determine
for sure whether there is manipulation or not,” said Wehrum, “and if there is manipulation
then there are other measures we could implement to take care of that.”
During the call, Wehrum referred to the announcement as a win-win. He says it
will benefit the agriculture sector that produces the grains for renewable fuels
and it will benefit the oil and gas sector that has to achieve RIN compliance.
