MFP certification deadline extended
USDA extended the deadline to certify 2018 crop production for
Market Facilitation Program payments. The Farm Service Agency extended the deadline
from May first to May 17th because rain and snow in many parts of
the country delayed harvest, preventing producers from certifying acres. The
payments help farmers affected by export losses because of tariffs.
The payments provide some relief from tariffs, helping producers through trade
issues, coupled with low commodity prices and natural disasters, said Richard
Fordyce, administrator of the Farm Service Agency. The extension was put in place
to make sure producers can finalize MFP applications, he said.
U.S. Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue put the trade mitigation program in place last
September. So far, more than $8.3 billion has been paid to nearly 600,000
applicants.
