Minnesota Corn Growers bring gubernatorial candidates to farms

The Minnesota Corn Growers (MCGA) are giving gubernatorial candidates a unique opportunity to better understand farming.

MCGA public policy director Amanda Bilek says the association extended invitations to every major party candidate hoping Minnesota’s next governor could visit a corn farm this fall.

“With the candidates, some have done some work in agriculture (and) have been on farms themselves.  But overall, because agriculture plays such a vital role in our state’s economy in addition to the role in Greater Minnesota communities, we thought it was a great time to spend a little bit of time one-on-one with a farm family.”

She tells Brownfield candidates will see modern technology in action and hear directly from farmers concerns related to transportation, regulations, and other issues.

“Also hoping to spend a little bit of time looking at some conservation practices in action at some of these different farms to get sort of the economy view, as well as the environmental view and that profit piece that is so important to the overall sustainability of our farm families.”

Bilek says four candidates have already visited Minnesota farms, discussing topics like healthcare and buffers.

Current Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton will not seek reelection when his term ends in 2019.
