USDA raises 2017 corn guess, lowers soybeans

The USDA has made modest adjustments to their 2017 corn and soybean production estimates.

As of October 1st, corn is expected to be 14.280 billion bushels, up 1% from September’s guess of 14.184 billion, with an average yield of 171.8 bushels per acre, compared to 169.9 last month. The USDA says 2017 currently has the third highest number of ears on record in the objective yield states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. If realized, record yields are expected in Michigan, Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Harvested area is seen at 83.119 million acres. In 2016, corn production was a record 15.148 billion bushels with an average yield of 174.6 bushels per acre and harvested area of 86.748 million acres.

Soybeans are pegged at 4.431 billion bushels, a new record, and while that is slightly less than September, it’s essentially the same when rounded, following a reduction in the average yield guess, from 49.9 bushels per acre in September to 49.5 in October. The pod count in the 11 objective yield states is expected to be down overall, with a year to year decline of more than 200 pods per square foot in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, and Nebraska, against an increase in pod counts for Arkansas and Missouri. If realized, record yields would be achieved in Missouri, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. This year’s harvested area is expected to be 89.471 million acres. In 2016, U.S. soybean production was 4.296 billion bushels with an average yield of 52.0 bushels per acre and harvested area of 82.696 million acres.
