Grain buyers want reliable suppliers

A grain analyst says South American export delays and political turmoil could be major influencers on the U.S. grain market this growing season.

Angie Setzer with Michigan-based Citizens Elevator tells Brownfield grain buyers are looking for reliable suppliers, even if it comes at a cost on the world market, and the port strikes this week in Argentina are favorable for U.S. exports.  “Unhappy citizens in South America, specifically Brazil and Argentina, will likely have a big impact on what we see happen in the global market. It’s important to remember the buyers, China specifically, are looking for a reliable supplier.”

Argentine port workers went on strike Wednesday over salary disputes and brought grain exports to a halt.  Shipments have resumed after the government replaced workers but some delays continue.

Setzer says the possibility of Brazil’s president being removed from power after a corruption scandal and their weakening currency will also impact the market.
