Wide spread frost damage and planting progress

Heavy frosts at the beginning of last week were followed by several days of more normal weather for Michigan farmers. The USDA says planting progress continues to remain behind last year and the five year average for corn and soybeans, but surged ahead for sugarbeets.

The winter wheat condition improved seven points to 70 percent good to excellent, 59 percent of the crop is jointed, slightly behind last year.

The USDA says 30 percent of corn is planted, two percent is emerged. Soybeans are now 11 percent planted.  Sugarbeets are 93 percent planted, five percent ahead of the five year average and 15 percent are emerged.

Frost damage to unprotected blueberry fields and apple and cherry orchards that were in bloom ranges from light to severe. Some freeze damage was also reported in vineyards.  Asparagus in the west central region of Michigan also had frost damage which furthered delayed harvest.  Rhubarb harvest is underway in the eastern part of the state.
