2017 dairy margin protection enrollment open

Dairy herdFarmers can now sign up for 2017 coverage in the dairy Margin protection program. The enrollment period is open through September 30th at Farm Service Agencies.  Farmers already enrolled can also update their current coverage level during the sign-up period.

The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) says the program provides financial assistance to farmers when the difference between the price of milk and feed costs falls below a set margin. Coverage levels are available between $4 and $8 margins.

NMPF says those that enrolled in the program at the start of 2015 will receive a 1.3% increase in their production history for 2017, reflecting the overall national increase in the nation’s milk supply since last year.

More resources can be found on NMPF’s website to help farmers calculate coverage levels.
