USDA raises acreage estimates

The USDA says U.S. farmers planted more corn, soybeans, and wheat this year than expected. The planted acreage total for corn was just over 94 million acres, about a half million more than the March estimate and up 7% from 2015, and the third largest since 1944. Corn planted for grain came out at 86.6 million acres, up 7% on the year and also the third largest since 1944.

This year’s U.S. soybean acreage is a new all-time high at 83.7 million acres, about one and a half million more than in March and 1% above a year ago, with projected harvested area at 83 million, which would also up 1% and a new all-time high. Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin planted record acreage.

Wheat acres, at 51 million acres, was up about a million acres from March, but down 7% from 2015. U.S. corn stocks as of June 1st were 6% higher than a year ago, soybean stocks jumped 39% and wheat stocks increased 30%.
