Monsanto is teaming up with a Japanese chemical company to develop future weed control solutions.

The agribusiness giant announced its latest partnership with Sumitomo in a press release that says both companies will work together to create an integrated system of germplasm, biotechnology and crop protection.

Monsanto Chief Technology Officer Robb Fraley says Sumitomo’s next-generation PPO herbicide has remarkable broad spectrum effect against both grass and broadleaf weeds, which will complement the Roundup Ready platform.

The new PPO herbicide is expected to be available within brands offered by both companies, and should be released commercially early in the next decade, pending regulatory approval.
