Michigan potato assessment increased

After harvest, cold storage coolers will be filled to the red line. Only two potatoes are need to fill a bag of chips.

The Michigan potato assessment has been increased for the first time in 18 years.

Executive Director Mike Wenkel of the Michigan Potato Industry Commission tells Brownfield for every 100 pounds of potatoes, growers and shippers will be assessed five and a half cents in 2016.  “That reflects a half cent total increase for every 100 pounds that the commission will be spending to do research, education, promotion and marketing activities of Michigan potatoes.”

Wenkel says the increased assessment reflects the cost of inflation and will support expanding potato research done in Michigan.
