Michigan beef producers address economics

George QuackenbushThe Michigan Cattlemen’s Association says producers need to know the limits of raising beef in the state.

Executive Vice President George Quackenbush tells Brownfield the Great Lakes provide additional challenges to producers.  “Although we all appreciate the Great Lakes, they sometimes give us some challenges in terms of transportation, obviously some environmental concerns that we have to be cognizant of and keep in mind.”   He says Michigan’s beef industry also includes a strong dairy industry which is unique compared to other areas of the country.

Quackenbush says the Michigan Cattlemen’s Association Summer Round Up will focus on the economics of beef production in the Great Lakes state.  “MSU Extension is going to be working with us and presenting the data that they have compiled from cattle farms in northern Michigan, so we can look at what those true costs are so they can help make management decisions.”

He says the event, which takes place this Friday in West Branch, will also include on-farm tours, demonstrations and educational sessions.
