Managing for record wheat yields

wheatheslipA Mid-Michigan farmer says better management of wheat fields is producing higher yielding crops.

Brian Haskin tells Brownfield planting winter wheat last fall in favorable conditions has helped the crop get off to a good start despite the wet spring.  “Wheat doesn’t usually tend to like a lot of water, which we’ve had this year obviously, but I think it will be a good crop.”

He says more timely fungicide and fertilizer applications are improving wheat yields.  “Now we’re trying to pay attention to them while we’re planting our corn and soybeans and timing our fungicide applications, which we were not doing in the past.”

USDA is forecasting another record yielding wheat crop in Michigan this year at 84 bushels per acre, up three bushes from 2015’s record.
