Less N going to Gulf from IL River

Petroleum barges on the Illinois River at FlorenceNutrient levels from the Illinois River into the Gulf of Mexico have dropped, according to a recent study. The University of Illinois research found nitrate concentrations were down 10% from 2010 through 2014 compared to the average load between 1980 and 1996. The load dropped by 15% in 2015.

The study found that newer varieties of corn lead to less nitrogen left in the ground. It is published in the Journal of Environmental Quality.
