EPA official comments on nutrient reduction strategies

A top official of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the agency fully supports voluntary nutrient reduction strategies being developed by states in the Mississippi River Basin.

Nancy Stoner, who is the EPA’s acting administrator for water and co-chair of the Hypoxia Task Force, addressed the National Cover Crops and Soil Health conference in Omaha this week.  Following her presentation, DTN’s Chris Clayton and I visited with her about the EPA’s plans for the Mississippi River Basin.  I asked her if EPA has a specific timetable for when it wants to see results from the voluntary efforts being implemented by states.  I also asked Stoner about the concerns expressed by those in the livestock industry that the agency is overreaching its authority on the Clean Water Act.
