Workshops on wireless soil moisture systems

Free workshops on wireless soil moisture monitoring for timing irrigation are being held today through Thursday in three locations in Missouri. The workshop today is in Kennett, on Wednesday in Sikeston and on Thursday January 20th in Columbia, Missouri.

Growers can meet with representatives from six leading manufacturers of wireless sensors. MU specialists say the cost of wireless systems has gone down a lot and can be as low as three to six dollars an acre.

  • As a 35-year water management professional, I am very pleased to see the wire-less soil moisture monitoring technology move into America’s heartland. I was trained by a Certified Prof. Agronomist, and received my M.S. in Agribusiness. We always preach that water measurement is the #1 rule of water management. There are several places to take these measurements to complete a farm’s water balance analysis, and soil moisture monitoring, using “best value for the money” strategies is a long over-due rule in irrigated agriculture. The energy embedded in the pumping and fertilizers is just too precious to not manage wisely. But it takes real commitment, and significant effort on the part of farmers, and Board of Directors to change.
