Weather

A typical Summer pattern across the Heartland

Hurricane Gert will remain well offshore and begin to accelerate toward the northeast. However, an active weather pattern will continue across the central and eastern U.S., with multiple disturbances broadly helping to focus showers and thunderstorms. Five-day rainfall totals could reach 1 to 3 inches, with locally higher amounts, from the Plains eastward. Among areas east of the Rockies, only Montana and southern and eastern Texas should remain mostly dry. Meanwhile, mostly dry weather will also prevail in much of the West, accompanied by a return to near- or above-normal temperatures.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of near- to above-normal temperatures virtually nationwide. Meanwhile, near- to below-normal rainfall in most areas of the country should contrast with wetter-than-normal weather in the upper Midwest, lower Southeast, and Pacific Northwest.
