Tranquil weather across the Heartland

On the Plains, cloudiness is increasing in advance of an approaching storm system. Unfavorably dry soils continue to hamper winter wheat establishment in some areas, particularly on the central High Plains.

Across the Corn Belt, mild, dry weather prevails. Autumn fieldwork is largely complete, and Midwestern winter wheat emergence (on November 27) ranged from 84% in Missouri to 96% in Illinois and Ohio.

In the South, dry weather prevails. Recent rainfall totaled at least 2 to 4 inches across the heart of the Southeastern drought area, helping to recharge topsoil moisture and reduce the threat of wildfires.

In the West, very cool weather accompanies increasing cloudiness across the southern half of the region. Showers are overspreading the Pacific Northwest, but dry weather covers the remainder of the western U.S.
