An active pattern yields beneficial moisture

On the Plains, mostly dry weather has returned, although a few showers linger across eastern Kansas and environs. Prior to this week’s impressive rainfall event, which resulted in 2- to 5-inch totals across portions of the central and southern Plains, winter wheat was rated 37% very poor to poor in Colorado, along with 25% in Kansas, 23% in Texas, and 19% in Oklahoma.

Across the Corn Belt, a significant rainfall event is underway in the Great Lakes region. The Midwestern rain is generally benefiting winter wheat and helping to condition soils in preparation for spring planting.

In the South, showers and locally severe thunderstorms in the vicinity of a cold front are heaviest in the central Gulf Coast region. Elsewhere, cooler, drier air is overspreading the western Gulf Coast region, while warm, dry weather in the southern Atlantic States favors fieldwork and crop development.

In the West, unsettled, cool, showery weather prevails across the northwestern half of the region, including northern California. In contrast, mild, windy weather in the Southwest is leading to an elevated to critical risk of wildfires, especially in southern sections of Arizona and New Mexico.
