Building upon the strength of the 25 year relationship

Indiana is celebrating the 25th Anniversary of its Sister-State Relationship with China’s Zhejiang Province.  Lt. Governor Becky Skillman welcomed Madam Qiao, Zhejiang Province’s Chairwoman to Indianapolis on Wednesday.  The Lt. Governor says the return trade mission highlights the potential within the Indiana-China relationship.  “They continue to talk about two states where they expect the majority of their investment to go,” she says.  “Indiana and California.  I don’t want to beat up on a fellow state – but I do subtly point out why our business climate is so much better here.”

She says continuing to develop that relationship means more economic growth and ultimately more jobs for Hoosiers.

Director of the Indiana State Department of Agriculture Joe Kelsay says people like to sit across the table and do business with people they know.  As the demand for goods and services increase in China – the strength of the 25 year relationship with the Zhejiang Province puts Indiana in a good place.  “Not only do we see that growth in income and in turn that growth in demand – we also have a relationship that has grown and developed over so many years it puts us in a really competitive place as we add opportunities for Hoosiers,” he says.

The delegation from the Zhejiang Province will head to Chicago before making their return to China.

Lt. Governor signs another MOU on trade mission

Lt. Governor Becky Skillman continues her trade mission in China and currently is in Beijing for several agriculture related meetings.  While in Beijing with the delegation this morning, (Indiana time) she signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the intent to begin agricultural collaborations with the Jilin Province.

The Lt. Governor and the delegation return from their trade mission in China on Sunday.

Lt. Governor signs agreements with Chinese businesses

Lt. Governor Becky Skillman has signed Memorandums of Understanding with three Chinese businesses.  Godeagle, Jiaxing Stone Wheel, and Henan Fukang Feather Group all intend to invest in Indiana.  Creating more than 50 jobs, the agreement with Godeagle would establish a cooking oil production and facility headquartered in Muncie.  In addition, Jiaxing Stone Wheel plans to enter into a joint venture with Sutong in Elkhart that could add 150 jobs and Henan wants to expand its feather collecting and processing facilities in Huntingburg, potentially adding 40 jobs.  Lt. Governor Skillman says, “Indiana’s business friendly environment is leading to additional job growth and investment from the relationships we have built in China.”

China is Indiana’s second largest Asian trading partner.  From 2000 to 2010, Indiana’s exports to China grew by 554 percent.

Lt. Governor recognizes sister state relationship

Lt. Governor Becky Skillman was joined by Vice Governor Gong Zheng of the Zhejiang province to recognize the 25th anniversary of Indiana and Zhejiang’s sister state relationship established in 1987 by Indiana’s then Governor Robert Orr.  Lt. Governor Skillman said, “Governor Orr had incredible foresight to recognize the potential for growth Indiana stood to gain.”  She added that Indiana’s partnership with China is strong and there are opportunities for additional job growth and investment.

The Lt. Governor presented the Vice Governor Shen Zulu with the Governor Robert Orr International Friendship Award.  The Vice Governor signed the original agreement in 1987.  Governor Mitch Daniels and Lt. Governor Skillman created the award, and the Vice Governor was the first person to receive it.
