State FFA Convention 10 years later

Marlene Eick of Radnor, was backstage during the 85th Ohio FFA State Convention shuffling FFA members on and off stage, 10 years ago Marlene Von Stein then, was on the same stage in a very different capacity.

“Ten years ago I had the pleasure of serving as the State FFA President for what was the 75th FFA Convention and what a memorable experience that was with the officer team I got to serve with,” Eick said.

In the 10 years since she served as State President, Marlene says that the State FFA Convention has changed in some ways, not so much in others.

“The convention has certainly changed some, in the mechanics of course, we think about all of the audio/visual technology changes we’ve had and some programmatic changes that have been added too,” Eick said. “The nice thing is the central theme is still the same and how can we engage students, recognize their achievements and all the things that happen around that, it always comes around to that singular purpose.”

On a side note, Marlene and I both graduated from Cory-Rawson High School, the difference being, I’m a couple decades older than Marlene.

To new State FFA officers – Be confident

During the final session of the 85th Ohio FFA State Convention on Friday, May 3, State President Shelby Faulkner will give her retiring address before handing the gavel to the new President of the Ohio FFA.

So what words of advice does Shelby have for the new officer team?

“I would just tell the next officers to take advantage of every opportunity, participate in everything they possible can and don’t be afraid to communicate with from across the state and even State Officers from other states,” Faulkner said. “I would just really tell them to build confidence in themselves, if they’re confident, then they’ll be able to go out there and make a difference.”

Opportunities galore for FFA members

Speaking at the Ohio FFA Recognition Luncheon on Thursday, May 2, Ohio Director of Agriculture, Dave Daniels said for FFA members across the state there are endless opportunities and an incredible future ahead of them.

“We’re going to have young folks who are going to decide to enter into any number of sciences that are ag based, every day we continue to find new uses for the products that we raise on Ohio’s farms, and one these young folks is going to be involved in that,” Director Daniels said. “There’s an endless opportunity and an endless future for these guys.”

In an interview with Brownfield the Director also reflected back to his days in the FFA.

“It gave me my first grounding in production agriculture,” Daniels said. “And by participating in Parliamentary Procedure, Public Speaking, there are a lot of things I do now and I think back it was my participation in those leadership organizations that helped shape my abilities to do those things now.”

Ohio FFA names State Stars

The Ohio FFA named their State Stars Thursday evening during 85th Ohio FFA State Convention.

Katherine Hayes_State Star in Agribusiness_webKatherine Hayes of the Marysville FFA was named State Star in Agribusiness, Austin Wippel of the Westfall FFA was named State Star Farmer and Jakob Wilson of the Fairbanks FFA was named State Star in Agricultural Placement.

For Hayes, being on stage at the State Convention was just as exciting as being on stage at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis last October when she was named the National Proficiency winner in Equine Science.

“This is definitely a huge accomplishment, because I was up against not only equine businesses, but all businesses in the state,” said Hayes. “The adrenaline wasn’t quite as much as when we were at National’s, but this is a huge accomplishment.”

Jakob Wilson of the Fairbanks FFA is the 2013 State Star in Agricultural Placement.

Jakob Wilson_State Star in Agricultural Placement (2)_web“These awards mean the world to me just because I love what I do and I’m so passionate about agriculture, it’s hard to explain the feeling this gives you,” Jakob said. “I wouldn’t change anything I’ve done and I would encourage people to join the FFA because of the great opportunities, you meet lots of people and you learn a lot from it.”

Jakob was also on stage last October in Indianapolis as the National Proficiency winner in Diversified Crop Production Placement.

The 2013 State Star Farmer is Austin Wippel of the Westfall FFA.

“My SAE consists of a hay and straw baling business, I basically started the business in 2009, going into my Freshman ag class,” said Wippel. “It includes the custom baling of hay and straw and I also have a 70 acre farm of corn and soybeans that I farm on the halves with my grandparents as part of my SAE.”

The 85th Ohio FFA State Convention continues Friday, May 3 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus. Later in the day State FFA President Shelby Faulkner will give her retiring address and the new officer team will be introduced.

Ohio FFA President’s first convention

As FFA members from across Ohio gather in Columbus for the 85th Ohio FFA State Convention, State President Shelby Faulkner of the A.B.Graham FFA shared with Brownfield what she remembers about her first State Convention.

“My first convention I remember walking in and just seeing thousands of FFA jackets everywhere and that was my first time going somewhere with that many FFA members,” said Faulkner. “Going to State FFA Convention there’s just this feeling in the air, it’s really hard to explain, but it’s just everyone feels like they’re a part and that you have some roll to play in this convention, that’s what I remember more than anything, watching the officers up on stage, their enthusiasm and all of the plaques and awards, it’s a feeling that so hard to explain.”

The opening session of the 85th State Convention kicks off on Thursday, May 2 at 2 p.m.

85th Ohio FFA State Convention

ShelbyFaulkner_StatePresident (1)_editThe 85th Ohio FFA State Convention begins Thursday, May 2, at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus.

State FFA President Shelby Faulkner says it’s a big week for FFA members across the state and while they’ll feature what’s become traditional, Shelby says they’ll also provide some new activities.

“We’re going to be recognizing our teachers and administrators on stage, which I think is very exciting,” Faulkner said. “And then we’re also going to have a concert for the first time ever.”

The concert features Casey James and Aaron Kelly.

Faulkner will be wrapping up her year as State President on Friday, May 3, she describes her year as “insane.”

“I’ve traveled all across the state of Ohio visiting many chapters and meeting students and as busy as I’ve been, I have enjoyed every single moment of it,” said the State FFA President. “I’ve had 15 officers that I’ve been able to watch grow and develop over the year, this is going to be the icing on the cake.”

Following her year as State President, Shelby tells Brownfield she’s going to take some time to relax and then begin taking classes in June at The Ohio State University where she’s majoring in Agriscience Education.

Ohio Youth Capitol Challenge

High school age 4-H and FFA members are being encouraged to apply for the Ohio Youth Capitol Challenge.

Darrell Rubel, director of learning delivery at the Ohio Farm Bureau says the program will focus on advocacy and policy development.

“We’re gonna bring the young people in and teach them about the policy development process,” said Rubel. “This is how your voice makes a difference, this is how you can make a difference in your community.”

50 high school students from across the state will be selected to participate in the day and a half program February 11 and 12 in Columbus, which is just the first part of the Ohio Youth Capitol Challenge program. From there Rubel says, the students will divide into teams, to identify what would make their community better.

“We’re going to ask them the question, “my community would be better…if,” Rubel said. “Then they’re going to be able to answer that question, whatever it might be, but then toy’re going to work together on an advocacy program to do community development.”

The application for the Ohio Youth Capitol Challenge is available online. The application deadline is November 30.
