Be prepared for a crisis

PelzerThere is an old saying: “Hope for the best but prepare for the worst”, that is true for today’s dairy farm. David Pelzer with Dairy Management Incorporated says they “believe every farm needs to be prepared for a potential crisis situation.” It may be an employee injury, an animal health emergency, a manure spill or even an undercover animal rights video. The time to develop a response plan is before an incident occurs. DMI has developed a checklist of things to do including what are the individual responsibilities and who to call in the case of an emergency. And you want to make sure everyone on the farm is aware of the plan.

The plan also needs to be current, to reflect the latest changes in the operation as well as the latest technology. Pelzer points to social media and undercover animal rights videos as something that requires an immediate response. To go with that, every dairy farm needs a pro-active plan to build the “good neighbor” image in the community.
