Is 2013 1947 all over again?
Iowa State University Extension Climatologist Elwynn Taylor says wet conditions at the beginning of a growing season make for the lowest yields.
After the start we’ve had – it isn’t looking good for this year’s crop. “You get poor rooting on the crop when it starts off wet,” he says. “Roots won’t grow into water. Then the roots can’t follow the water down and you’re getting by with two-foot roots in hot dry weather. Then the plants die.”
Taylor says that’s what happened in 1947, in 1977 in Iowa and in 1983. And he says – it’s shaping up for 2013.
