Brazil’s corn, soybean output limited by logistics

With the right logistical improvements, Brazil could dramatically increase its agricultural output. Renato Rasmussen, a grains and oilseeds analyst with Rabobank Sao Paulo in Brazil, says farmers in his country have increased production through double cropping, but face other limiting constraints.

In a recent conversation with Brownfield Ag News, Rasmussen said that in the 2013/2014 growing season, Brazil expects to produce more soybeans slightly less corn than in the season that they just harvested.

Rasmussen says Brazilian farmers have improved production techniques to increase corn and soybean output, but the primary limiting factor is logistical. The first challenge is getting crops from interior growing areas to coastal shipping ports. But even after grain arrives at the port, ships commonly wait to load for 100 days.
