Action alert: Fungicide resistance prevention

The United Soybean Board’s Take Action program has been expanded to combat fungicide resistance.

Carl Bradley, plant pathologist with the University of Kentucky, told growers at Commodity Classic NOW is the time to act, “There’s been some recent documentations of fungicide resistant pathogens. We’re not at the level of severity that we see currently with herbicide resistant weeds but we are at the very beginning of it.”

Nebraska farmer and USB director Greg Fujan says there are four steps to prevent fungicide resistance – the first is to scout for diseases on a regular basis, “Number two is understand disease thresholds. Know when to treat and when not to treat. Number three, apply fungicides in a timely manner and ONLY when it makes economic sense. Number four is to rotate fungicide modes of action. Know what the active ingredient is in fungicides and rotate to preserve the technology.”

He says growers must be proactive. A fungicide classification chart for retailers and farmers is at “united soybean dot org”.

Take Action was started to combat herbicide resistance and is a partnership between the Soy Checkoff, universities and private companies.
