Wisconsin fieldwork behind schedule

Many Wisconsin fields are still too wet for fieldwork.  The USDA’s National Ag Statistics Service says it was dry for almost three days, but the soil is still saturated.

Spring tillage is a week behind average with only 13% complete.  Nineteen percent of the oats and 17% of the state’s potatoes are planted, but just 1% of corn has been planted in the southern part of the state.  Farmers are reluctant to plant with cool nights scattered frost last week, and more cool nights this week with snow possible Thursday.

Farmers are also reporting a lot of alfalfa winterkill, especially in low-lying areas.
