Wisconsin DNR to sell 10,000 acres
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Board has approved the first phase of a plan to make 10,000 acres of DNR land available for sale. The plan, a directive from the state legislature and included in the 2013-15 state budget specifies that the proceeds from the sale be used to repay outstanding public debt related to the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program.
Initiated by the Wisconsin Legislature in 1989, the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program has acquired ownership or easement on more than 600,000 acres. The purpose to preserve valuable natural areas and wildlife habitat, protect water quality and fisheries and expand opportunities for outdoor recreation. DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp says the sale of DNR lands will ensure the continuation of the Knowles-Nelson program.
The 10,000 acres will be divided into four phases: DNR Real Estate Director Doug Haag says there are 22 parcels totaling about 1,400 acres in this first phase. Parcels with legal road access will be offered to the general public. Parcels without public access will be offered to adjacent land owners. DNR will issue a press release when a parcel is up for bid and the bid window will be open for 90 days. Haag says the first offer will probably be around mid-August.
