Wildlife Services gets support

USDA Undersecretary Ed Avalos talking with sheep producers in Charleston, SC_webA letter, spearheaded by the American Sheep Industry (ASI) and signed by 169 organizations representing everyone from food producers and wildlife organizations, to sportsmen and local governments has been delivered to leaders of the U.S. Senate and U.S. House supporting sufficient funding for Wildlife Services (WS).

“The letter is a powerful and unified message to Congress on the importance of federal wildlife management,” stated Peter Orwick, ASI executive director.

In an interview with Brownfield this past January at the ASI annual meeting in Charleston, SC, USDA Undersecretary Ed Avalos talked about Wildlife Services.

“We’re committing resources to maintain we have a strong livestock protection program,” Avalos said. “But also resources for research, research to look for other methods to control predators.”

“It’s WS’s cooperative nature that allows the agency to accomplish so many programs and make it the most cost effective and efficient program in the federal government,” said Orwick.

Wildlife causes more than $12.8 billion dollars in damage each year.
