Wet, humid weather increasing pest and disease issues in Michigan

silage harvest

Corn silage harvest has started in pockets of Michigan after a week of generally drier weather.

The Great Lakes Regional Ag Statistics office says 85 percent of the state’s corn crop is in the dough stage, 54 percent is dented and condition remained steady at 58 percent good to excellent. Soybeans are 95 percent setting pods, six percent dropping leaves and soybean condition improved an additional three points to 67 percent good to excellent.

Dry beans are 93 percent setting pods, 24 percent dropping leaves and dry bean condition dropped two points to 48 percent good to excellent. Sugarbeet condition improved three points to 71 percent good to excellent, and four percent of the crop is harvested.  The third cutting of alfalfa is 62 percent complete, fourth cutting is at seven percent.

The USDA says recent wet weather and generally humid conditions has increased disease and insect pressures for fruit and vegetable growers. Harvest continues for raspberries, blackberries, plums, peaches, pears, and some apple varieties.  Sweet corn, potato, tomato, and cabbage harvest is also underway.
