VFD alters research approach of Zinpro

An animal nutrition company specializing in organic trace minerals is changing its approach to research because of the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD).

Minnesota-based Zinpro swine research specialist Dr. Zach Rambo says prior to the directive, resources were focused mostly on performance.

“Now, with the implementation of the VFD and the voluntary reduction of the use of antibiotics in the industry, our focus has shifted a lot more to how our products interface with minimal antibiotic use or no antibiotic use production systems.”

He tells Brownfield the importance of supporting immune function and overall wellness of animals has been elevated, but the goal remains achieving the best performance and profitability.

Rambo says the VFD has also changed the way Zinpro interacts with pork producers.

“Largely through the types of questions and challenges we’ve been asked to come in and help solve in those different production systems.”

Rambo says an example of that is how Zinpro looks into not only optimal nutritional strategies, but also management strategies like biosecurity.

The VFD regulations for antibiotic use in livestock go into effect January first.
