USGC increases promotion of ethanol exports

Air pollution is a big problem in China’s major cities.

The U.S. Grains Council (USGC) is putting more emphasis on promoting U.S. ethanol exports.

Grains Council chairman Alan Tiemann tells Brownfield they’re focused on the markets of China, India, Japan and Mexico because of air quality concerns and growing fuel demand in those countries.

“Obviously, China and India have huge population bases with a growing middle class—and they have air quality issues,” Tiemann says. “There’s just a lot of reason for them to adopt an ethanol policy that will benefit not only their economy, but their quality of life.”

Tiemann, a farmer from Seward, Nebraska, says the council will continue with its traditional feed grain marketing and market development programs.

“We’ll still do all the market development things we’ve done in the past—developing livestock industries and the feeding industries around the world—but we’re focusing on the hot new market around the globe in ethanol,” he says.

Tiemann spoke with Brownfield during the USGC’s board of delegates meeting in Louisville, Kentucky.
