USGC applauds Mexico’s adoption of E10

Mexico is increasing the maximum amount of ethanol that can be blended in Mexican gas supplies from 5.8 percent to 10 percent.

“It’s another step along the way,” says Tom Sleight, president and CEO of the U.S. Grains Council. “It’s great progress in terms of developing a market—from scratch, really—in Mexico for ethanol.”

Sleight says the policy change is not a mandate and it does not yet apply to Mexico’s three largest cities—Monterrey, Guadalajara and Mexico City—but he’s hopeful it will in the future. He says Mexico is a 12 billion gallon fuel market.

“So you can do the math from that—ten percent would be 1.2 billion,” he says. “But we think, more modestly, that you might get around 700 to 800 million gallons, conservatively, if this regulation gets put in place.”

The Mexican Institute of Petroleum is currently studying the merits of E10 to determine if its use should be expanded to all regions of the country.
