USDA: 2017 U.S. corn acreage up from March guess

The USDA says producers planted slightly more corn than expected this year. The number was debated for months after a slow start to planting in some key growing areas and widespread reports of replanting.

At 90.886 million acres, that’s still down 3% from 2016’s total of 84.004 million, but up almost a million from the March prospective planting projection of 89.996 million acres. The USDA says acres were unchanged to lower in 38 of the 48 states used in the report. Harvested area is expected to be 83.946 million acres, compared to 86.748 million a year ago.

Soybean acreage was pegged at 89.513 million acres, a new all-time high and up 7% from the year ago total of 83.433 million. In March, the USDA projection bean acres at 89.482 million acres, implying a minimal switch from corn to beans during planting. The USDA reports acreage was unchanged to higher in 24 of the 31 states in this update. Harvested area is seen at 88.731 million acres, compared to 82.736 million last year.

The USDA’s first set of prevent plant numbers for 2017 is out in August.

All wheat acreage was down 9% from last year and the lowest since at least 1919 at 45.667 million acres. The 2016 total was 50.154 million acres and March’s report projection planted area of 45.059 million. Harvested area for all types is seen at 38.115 million acres, compared to 43.890 million a year ago.

By type, planted area for winter wheat is estimated at 32.839 million acres, compared to 32.747 million in March and 36.137 million for 2016, with harvested area at 25.760 million acres, compared to 30.222 million last year. Spring wheat planted area is reported at 10.899 million acres, compared to 11.308 million in March and 11.605 million a year ago, with harvested area of 10.497 million acres, compared to 11.303 million in 2016.
