US pork regains access to Argentine market

For the first time since 1992 US pork has unfettered access to the Argentine market.  Argentina was among several countries with non-science based barriers to US pork imports.  Under the agreement, all fresh, chilled, and frozen pork and pork products from the US are eligible for export to the country.

The announcement follows an August 15 meeting between Vice-President Mike Pence and Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri during Pence’s recent trip to Buenos Aires.

National Pork Producers Council president Ken Maschhoff says the industry has long sought to resume exports to Argentina and US pork producers are grateful for the Trump administration’s work to regain access to the market.  The organization is also urging the administration to negotiate market access in other countries that remain closed to US pork due to non-science based trade restrictions, like India and Thailand.

The US pork industry is the world’s largest exporter of pork and relies on exports for growth.  NPPC says exports added $50 to every US hog marketed in 2016.
