Two years for USDA to ready GMO labeling law

Top StoryThe president signed the GMO labeling law Friday and the USDA has two years to work out the regulatory details.

The ag and food industries support the compromise, mandatory legislation that pre-empts the Vermont GMO labeling law.

More than one-thousand groups are part of the Coalition for Safe Affordable Food that pressed for a national GMO labeling standard that would prevent food companies from following Vermont’s law and potentially different laws in other states.

Gary Marshall, CEO of the Missouri Corn Growers Association, says ag groups are very pleased the bill has been signed, “It was an interesting compromise between the House and the Senate. Obviously, it doesn’t have everything in it we wanted. It doesn’t have everything in some of the other folks wanted. In the end, it was a really good compromise.”

Opponents say the new law has too many loopholes and won’t inform all consumers because there are options other than printing GMO information on packaging. The Organic Consumers Association is calling on consumers to boycott brands that do not label products that contain genetically engineered ingredients. It says nearly a half-million consumers have agreed to the pledge.
